my point of view for When I Close My Eyes by Elizabeth Musser

February 20, 2020 in my point of view

Welcome to my point of view for When I Close My Eyes by Elizabeth Musser and enter below to win your own ebook version of this powerful story!

Could she ever share the secret of The Awful Year?

There is one story that novelist Josephine Bourdillon shirked from writing. And now she may never have a chance. Trapped in her memories, she lies in a coma.

The man who put her there is just as paralyzed. Former soldier Henry Hughes failed to complete the kill. What’s more: he never received full payment–funds that would ensure surgery for his son.

As detectives investigate disturbing fan letters, a young but not-so-naïve Paige Bourdillon turns to her mother’s turbulent past for answers. Could The Awful Year be worse than the one they’re living now?

Set against the flaming hills of North Carolina and the peaceful shores of the Mediterranean Sea, When I Close My Eyes tells the story of two families struggling with dysfunction and finding that love is stronger than death.

    my point of view:

I received this book as a Christmas gift from a friend. The story took my breath away in so many ways, I hope I can do justice to it in this review. As you all know, I am a huge fan of of christian Fiction – mostly romance, but I do enjoy other genres as well!  I was pleasantly surprised to find there are elements of mystery, suspense, redemption, illness, forgiveness and healing for all of the characters involved and even a little romance.

But the heart of the story deals with a topic most people try to avoid – depression. It affects so many of our lives, but no one wants to openly discuss it. Some people may even shy away from reading about this topic in a fiction story – I mean, most of us read for escapism, right? Who wants to read about afflictions? Well, let me tell you, if you think you are one of those people, I encourage you to take a chance on this story, truly. This novel brings to light the ways depression can touch everyone’s lives, in all ways, not just the individual who suffers from it. I think we can all learn some great lessons in compassion when reading this book.

Beyond the hard hitting topics is the overall atmosphere of the story. The dual settings of North Carolina and France are amazing. Ms. Musser has an obvious love for both locations and it truly comes out in her writing. Makes me want to take a road trip to NC and soon!

    About Elizabeth Musser

ELIZABETH MUSSER writes ‘entertainment with a soul’ from her writing chalet–tool shed–outside Lyon, France. Elizabeth’s highly acclaimed, best-selling novel, The Swan House, was named one of Amazon’s Top Christian Books of the Year and one of Georgia’s Top Ten Novels of the Past 100 Years (Georgia Backroads, 2009). All of Elizabeth’s novels have been translated into multiple languages.

From an interview with Publisher’s Weekly, “Elizabeth Musser likes to say she has two part-time jobs. Not only is she an award-winning novelist, but she and her husband serve as missionaries at a small Protestant church in Lyon, France. In both lines of work, she avoids preaching and simplistic answers, choosing instead to portray a God who cares in the midst of life’s complexity…”

Elizabeth adds, “My desire is to offer the best literature I can write, drawing the reader into a story that is compelling, believable and sprinkled with historical detail. I seek to give a realistic picture of what faith lived out in this world looks like, and, as always, I hope that my stories can be appreciated by all audiences, not just those readers who hold my same religious beliefs. It is a delight to receive confirmation of this through reader letters.”

For over twenty-five years, Elizabeth and her husband, Paul, have been involved in missions’ work in Europe with International Teams. The Mussers have two sons, a daughter-in-law and three grandchildren who all live way too far away in America. Find more about Elizabeth’s novels at www.elizabethmusser.com and on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

Ms. Musser has been so kind to offer a free ebook copy of this truly touching story to one of our readers, to enter simply comment below and tell us what your favorite Christian Fiction genre is. Winner will be notified via email, good luck!

My favorite is romance with a little suspense in it but I often read other genre if I hear a lot of good things about a book.

I’m never sure what “Christian fiction” is these days. Lately I have really enjoyed “Christian sci-fi” by Chautona Havig but I also like Historical Christian fiction.

As a retired ordained minister, I could easily “brush off” this question because I know a lot of people of faith argue that Christians should only read a narrow genre. But I read across genres (317 in 2019 and reviewed every one) and I think I’m more well-rounded because of it

My favorite trope is the Christian who “preaches” by the life he or she lives, not by verbal assertions. And in living the good life, the character withstands and overcomes trials. Is this a dual time line or memories through back story. Would love to read it . Thank you for the giveaway

I like Christian Suspense, Historical Fiction and stories that deal with hot button topics. I enjoy reading about those who make decisions (either before becoming a Christian or while turning their back on God) that show life long consequences for their actions. I find these so true to life!
      Thanks for this opportunity!

I like all Christian fiction! I do like suspense a lot, it’s one of my top favorites, but really, all are fine with me! I like all of my fiction to be “real”, and it doesn’t bother me if it reflects issues from real life. It may show me a better way to look at things, or at least make me stop to think.

      This. Sounds. Amazing.

A year ago I would not hesitate to say Christian romance is my favorite genre. I do love reading it. But over the past year I have started getting into Christian literary fiction. I’ve discovered I like my books with the same focus on God, but with a little more meat on the bones. I like digging into the books that touch deeper subjects. Now, I will always open a romance, but definitely lean more towards the literary books.
